ENG 100 Assignment #2 Academic Mindsets Argument Professor; Mr Sabatino Mangini May 07,2017 Fixed and Growth Mindsets Aristotle said, “Education is the best provision for life’s journey.’’ The best I can do to be successful in my life’s journey is to earn a college degree. Going to college will provide me with the means to pursue a career in the medical field. Earning a degree will prepare me and mature me to face the real world. However, before I can become a doctor I must be on the right path. I must have the mindset to overcome any and every obstacle that may want to interfere with my education. Everything that I am doing does matter and all the things I am doing now is preparing me for a better and healthy life. In this essay I’ll talk about how has my academic mindset impacted my abilities as a student to learn. When talking about academic mindsets I will refer to two things, which are the fixed mindset and the growth mindset, how they have impact my abilities to learn. A growth mindset has had a positive impact on my abilities to learn because it helps me learn English, get my Ged and learn about auto mechanics. Many students are born with different talents that enable them to be successful in life but students like me will have to be taught a skill and master it, in order to be successful in it. So therefore, we all are different because we all have different mindset, goals and different purpose in life. Some students think negatively while others think positively. Some student think that there are born with certain amount of intelligence and they can not develop it while other think that they can develop their intelligence by working hard to get what they want. I think those who think that way are in the right direction. I know that when somebody have a fixed mindset, that person think that he or she is born with a limited intelligence and he or she can not do anything about it. At school for example when that person is not doing well, he or she can think that it is how he or she is born, that he or she is dumb and can’t get improvement. On the other side I know that someone who have a growth mindset think that he or she is capable to develop his or her intelligence by working hard. According to the article ( The Perils of “Growth Mindset” Education: Why we’re trying to fix our kids when we should be fixing the system), Alfie Kohn stated that “Kids tend to fare better when they regard intelligence and other abilities not as fixed traits that they either have or lack, but as attributes that can be improved through effort.” and according to another article which is (Teachers,Parents Often Misuse Growth Mindset Research), Carol Dweck stated that “kids with what she calls “fixed mindset” stop trying when when confronted with a challenge because they’ve convinced themselves that they’re not good at math or writing or whatever the subject is” on the other side she say that “adult can, instead, help foster a “growth mindset”- the belief that the brain is like muscle that can grow stronger through hard work.” I like more Dweck argument because she is using the growth mindset. After reading her article, I remember that when I was back in my native country of Benin Republic, I was fascinating about the structures and the functions of cars. At that time, I was very curious. My curiosity was growing everyday. One day, when I woke up, I started thinking about the shape of my Dad car and I went to get the car key. After getting the key, I went to open the car and I started to look at every part of the car from the front to the back and I began to wonder about how all those part(the Radio, the sits, the wheel, the gear etc) have been fix together in the car.The more I watched, the more I became eager and fascinated to work as a mechanic. It was for this reason that, few years ago I decided to go to a trade school, to obtain more knowledge about cars. Once I had decided, I went to my parents to propose my idea to them. Both of them encouraged me to follow my dream of becoming mechanic. After having the conversation with my parents, I inquire about the auto-mechanic program. By doing so, I got in contact with a family friend, who was in charge of the program. We agreed that I will be attending class six days a week. On each day, I had to focus on specific tasks or skills. I had to be at school at 8 o’clock but I had to wake up early in order to make it on time because my school was an hour driving away. On the first week, I learned how to use different types of tools, such as adjustable wrench, combination wrench, double box wrench, rubber wrench, ratchet, socket etc. The following weeks I learn more stuff about and at the end I was able to have a lot knowledge about cars. I reached my goals with my my growth mindsets. My growth mindsets also helps me when I came in America and I had to learn English and get my Ged. Many of my friends were telling me that it’s hard to pass the GED test, especially the English and the Social Study part. When these friends were saying this stuff, I used to said to myself that I’m going to maybe fail this test because first, I don’t understand English, Secondly I don’t know a lot about America History and there is no way I could pass it in French which is the language I speak well. Those though were a barrier for me but I don’t like to be negative about things. At that point the fixed mindset wanted to stop me to do what I can do to succeed and continue my studies but as I’m positive and I like to be positive about things even though I know it will not be easy, I told myself that I am not a failure and even though, I will fail, I will try and do it. Also, people who go and pass the test does not have two heads, so , I will do anything I can to pass this test. After those reflection to myself, I found a school where I can learn, understand, speak and have conversation in English with people. This school was Delaware County Literacy Council ( DCLC). I started on October 2014 where I used to go two days a week. This is the beginning of growth mindset. I started to think about how to do, to understand and learn faster so I can pass my GED which will allow me to start college. I started the class and was getting a lot of homework that will help me with my writing, vocabulary, grammar skills and also to get better in communication. Nothing is easy in this world if you don’t give yourself into it. You have to be determine. By the time I was taking this class, every time in the afternoon or evening, if you see me, I always have a paper or my bag in my hand. It is either I am going to do my homework or I am doing it. I knew I will study a lot to get it and that was what I did. It was not easy but I did it. I couldn’t speak to anybody and that person will understand me in English. After learning English, it is now I started to take my GED Classes at the same place in 2015 and I found another place too which is the Welcoming Center for New Pennsylvania. I was going to both school and at the same time was working full time. That is what we call “determination”. Finally I get my GED in June 2016 and here I am. I think America education System does not help a lot because there are not a lot of challenges between students. For example in my country there are a lot of challenges where students will be working on the board after class just to be able to work harder than others. They have there own teacher who help them understand what they need to understand. I have a growth mindset because I like to learn and I like to know new things, have more experiences. This is what I will tell you. In life, you have to be positive and be ready to embrace new opportunities. You have to persevere to get what you want even though it is hard, try more and more to achieve what you want and here are three questions that I would like you to ask yourself every time you have a doubt about something. Where I am going and how to get there? Can I try first before I say I can’t? Now, I didn’t do good, how can I improve myself to get there? Work cited: Jean Badou
Professor: Sabatino Mangini Eng 100 Assignment#1: Draft 2 ( Hiraeth Narrative) May 7, 2017 My Best Memories from Benin My Home Country Outside my house, we had a big yard with mango trees, papaya trees, orange trees,a small shed, a big bathroom(wc), a water well and an avocado tree. My four friends were outside waiting for me -- Modeste, Romanus,Martial, and Candide..Modeste wanted to play a game of “cache-cache,” which was like hide-and-seek. In this game, one person would close his eyes with a shirt or other clothing and the others would hide in different places, then that person would say to them “ are you ready?” and everybody else would say “yes!”. Then he would take the cloth off his eyes and try to find everybody with the cloth in his hand. When he found one person, he would throw the cloth on him, then both would try to find the rest, until they found the last one, and then the game was over. During the game, if the person with the cloth threw it on you and it didn’t reach you, then he would run or race behind you and throw it on you to catch you. If he did, then both would try to find others. It was a joy to play this game. On that particular day, at first, I was too sad to play when Modeste said, “Come on, Jean. Let’s play cache-cache.” I was too sad and I knew I would be distracted, but then Modeste insisted again and again. As I remembered the joy of the game, I finally said yes. I couldn’t help thinking that this would be the last time I played this game with my friends. This realization was probably the main reason I was the last person to go outside that day. Perhaps I was trying to avoid the inevitable. The following week I would leave Benin, my home country. That meant I would leave all my friends. I knew I would never be with them anytime soon, and I knew I was beginning another life in United States, especially in Pennsylvania, where my father was working hard. I would have to start all over with new friends, and I knew things would never be the same. I was the youngest in our group of friends; Romanus was the oldest among us, then Martial followed, then Modeste and Candide. We all grew up together in the same area called “ Fifonsi.” We went to the same school, “ Cs Les Genis De Tankpe.” and “ Ceg Houeto”. We used to do our homework, go to church and play some games like soccer, hide-and-seek, racing, biking, and ludo together. We were like brothers, family and best-friends, which made us closer. The week before I left my country, in the morning by 9 am, we were all together under the big mango tree, which had green and yellow flowers with some beautiful mangoes that were ready to eat. We put some chairs made with wood, painted in white, under the tree. We all sat on the chairs in a circle talking about what we were going to do during our vacation from school. Then we started talking about the games we had played, reminding each other. Modeste asked me, “Do you remember when we were playing cache-cache and you went to hide behind the mango tree, and I was far away looking at you but didn’t say anything at first. Then I screamed and said “here he is”. At that moment you wanted to run away when a mango fell down from the tree and I left you and ran to get the mango?” Then I said, “Do you remember when you fell down next to the avocado tree, when we were chasing you, Martial?” “Do you remember when Modeste and Romanus found you and you couldn’t run away?” Martial said. When I would hide successfully and my friends couldn’t find me, I would feel on top of the world. If my friends found me, then I would run. They would race after me to catch me. If they did, the game was over. Even so, we laughed a lot. If I was sad, my friends would take me out of my comfort zone. Even if I was sad before, the game would bring joy and distract me from my sadness. Now it was time for the game Modeste wanted to play. Everybody sat in my yard. They asked me to be the person who would go hide first, and at first I said no. But they pushed me until I said yes. I went to hide behind the water well constructed with brown brick, which had a long multicolor rope, and inside were some lines where people could put their feet when digging. Outside the well was a big brick on which someone who couldn’t reach the rope stood. They couldn’t image I could hide there, so they were unable to find me. After I got out, they tried to catch me. Then I ran, and they were behind me racing to catch me. My friend Martial threw a shirt and it caught me, so the game was over. The same day by 2 pm, when we weren’t playing games, we were forced to do homework. We all would meet in a group and work on the assignment our teacher gave us in school. Everybody went over the instructions. The moment one person would not read his homework and have no idea about what was going on, he would come sit between us. We had to talk to him, so next time, he would learn from his mistake. Because when one person didn’t do his homework, it was harder for us to work within a given time. At that moment, that person would put us behind, and we would have to read everything and make sure he understood the topic before we continued with our work. During the studying, everyone among us had to participate by going to the board and showing his answer. By the time one was writing, the rest of the group would be doing their own work to make sure the person on the board was right. After all, we discussed the parts that were wrong and fixed them together. Then everyone could write the answers in his note book or on his assignment sheet. We also used to play soccer with another team from 5 to 7:30 pm, and we had our team of twelve. The team name was “ La gloire” which means in English”The glory”. We used to wear a white uniform because the white meant for us “clear”. Clear in the sense that, if we went on the field, we would clear everything and leave a good mark. The team members were Modeste, Romanus, Candide, Zayed, Abel, Sidney, Alphonse, Ghislain, Audrey, Rachidi, Emmanuel, Wahab and me. I was usually at the goal. It was rare for me to be in front when we faced another team. Romanus was at the defense because he was strong and good in defense. Modeste, Martial and Candide were the ones who attacked. I remember the last day we played with another team was a week before I left my country. That day, I was saying to myself, “I hope this is not going to be my last game with my friends before I leave the country”. I sat on the goal when Candide said, “ Jean, are you ready for this game?” I said, “yes”. We were going to win this one. This day was for us. Then, I called all the members of the team, and I told them, “Let’s make this day unforgettable”. Romanus said, “Count on me, I’m the one in front of you and no one will put the ball in our goal”. Then the rest said, “We are together, so you will be good here”. I said, “No worries, let’s pray before we start”. When we started the game, no team between us put a ball in the adverse goal for the first forty five minutes. When we went on break, we changed our plan. Modeste took Candide’s place, and we replaced Martial with Zayed, one of our team members who played defense too. At this moment, everything started to go well in our favor. Modeste score one goal in the last ten minutes. At the end of the game, our team won. We scored one goal and the other team had zero. At the end, we all met in front of our goal and took some pictures. In one picture we all put Modeste on top. I was in the middle of the goal, Candide and Martial were in my left hand side, Romanus and Zayed were in my Right hand side and the others in front of us and all of us created a circle and put Modeste on top. I felt good at the end of this day because I knew that even if I couldn’t go back to this day anymore, I had very good memories. If I went back to visit my friends, we would talk about that day. Even so, if I go back to that place, now, we’re all grown up. We can’t do homework together anymore; we can’t play those game anymore. Fixed mindsets and Growth mindset are two differents things. In the world, everyone have differents ways of thinking. Some people think negatively while some think positively. Every students is different and unique. I wonder why it is like that. In the article name Teachers, Parents Often Misuse Growth Mindset Research, the author psychologist Carol Dweck, from Stanford University stated according to her researches that a lot of students believe that intelligence is a fixed traits. They believe in their own intelligence. “ Kids with what she called fixed mindsets stop trying when when confronted with a challenge” Just because they think there are not good in a subject for example Writing and Math. In contrast to that statement, Carol Dweck argues that “adult can, instead, help foster a “good mindset”- the belief that the brain is like a muscle that can grow stronger through hard work”. According to those statement Carol Dweck distinguish what is fixed mindset and growth mindsets. From my understanding, children with fixed mindsets think that their efforts toward a work is worthless and in school there are not smart enough to grow their intelligence but students with growth mindsets believe they can grow their intelligence by working hard. In the article The perils of Growth Mindset Education, the author Alfie Kohn stated that “kids tend to fare better when they regard intelligence and other abilities not as fixed traits that they either have or lack, but as attributed that can be improved through effort.” According to these two articles I think that student who think that there are smart enough and don’t want to develop their abilities of learning or intelligence are fixed mindsets while the students who want to grow their intelligence by working hard have a growth mindset. As a college students I have both fixed and growth mindset but I have more growth mindsets. I have a fixed mindsets because sometimes I feel like people will make fun of me if I say something that is not correct or something that is different than their point of view. I also have a growth mindsets because I believe in myself and I know that I’m a learner and I like to take things positively in my life. I like to learn from my mistake and get better everyday of my life. Especially in school I like to improve myself. Hiraeth Writing Process Reflection Hiraeth! Hiraeth! What is the meaning of this word ? That was the question I asked myself the first time I heard this word. After the explanation of the word by my professor and some researches on my own, I found that the word Hiraeth doesn't have a specific meaning but it can be associate to be homesickness, a place or a moment in your past that you would like to go back to make changes but can’t. It can also be or a new environment that one is not used to or never was. When I think about this word “Hiraeth” the scene that come in my mind is as a young child in my native country of Benin Republic in west africa, I was the most happiness little boy then anyone would image. I’m not only happy because of my friends but because of the happiness I witness among my community. In my country, there are a lot of villages and everybody have it’s village. Even if you are born in a city, your parents are from somewhere which is their village and as long as it is their village, it’s yours too. When I was kid, I didn’t have the chance to stay long in my parents village which is my village. It was by the time I grow up and was 15 years old I started to go in my village for vacation. I usually go when we take school break or vacation. Whenever time I go in my village, I usually like to spend more time with my grandparents especially my grandmother because she likes to talk to me and spend time with me. My grandmother likes to go in her field every morning and after her field in the afternoon she likes to make her “Tchakpalo” which is a drink made with corn, wheat, and water. Tchakpalo is a traditional drink in Benin and a lot of people like it. The first day the tchakpalo is made, everybody can drink it. Even a kid but after three and more days a kid can’t drink it anymore because it becomes like alcohol. I remember if I go in my village, the thing I like to do with my grandmother is to help her if she want to go in her field or do her Tchakpalo. Every morning we wake up early by 7:30 AM get ready to go in the field. We usually pack the things we will need when we will get there like: Clothes, bowl to put food, water, ingredients and others necessary things that we will need. After packing up everything, we all walk in group but my grandmother usually call a “Zemidjan”. In my country Zemidjan is the people who drives you around with their motorcycle. When she get in the field she usually wait for us under a big tree where there are all the tools we are going to use that day. The field was about 20 minutes of walking from the house . So when we get there, we put everything under the tree. Under the tree was like a house where we have pot, fire to cook, water, all the need of kitchen and also some chair and tables . After getting in the field we (my brother Armel, my cousin Nina and Saturnin, my aunt and I) usually take the tools we are going to use in the field. In the field, we usually plant corns, beans, yams, peanuts, pepper, tomatoes, cassava, some fruits and other food. We all plough while my grandmother stay behind planting the plant of the day. It might be corn, beans or another thing. We usually work together and while working we do some competition to see who will be the first who will finish to plough 10 to 20 lines. When my grandmother get tired, she goes under the tree to rest while we still working and in the afternoon like 12:30 pm or 1 pm we all stay together and cook the meal we will eat. While one person is going to get pepper, the other will get tomatoes or yams or the ingredient we want to use. After getting everything my aunt, my cousin Nina and my grandmother help each other to cook the soup while we the man cook the yam and make fufu. After everything is done the woman stay together and eat. Same thing with the man. After eating and digesting, we all rest for about 20 minutes ,talk and laugh and later go back to work. By 3 pm my grandmother go home while we still working and after two hours to three, we all finish and take the way to home. The last time I went in my village was to bury my grandmother who died in December 2014 and this the moment I realise that I can not see her again I realise that everything is done between us on this ground. My grandmother with whom I didn’t spend enough time with and I was thinking when I will come back in my village she will tell me some stories and we will have fun together. As a first generation college graduate, a decision I made early in life was to have a growth mindset. If you’re new to the term growth mindset, or maybe just on the hunt for resources, check out Teaching Channel’s Growth Mindset Deep Dive. While many people assume things in my life have come easily, I’ve spent my entire existence struggling to succeed. Blessed or cursed (depending on your perspective) with an insane amount of drive as well as a natural curiosity toward all things, my life has been a constant cycle of discovery, failure, retooling, and — mostly — eventual success.
This lifestyle has carried over into my classroom, as I believe that regardless of the content I’m teaching, it’s my duty as an educator to prepare all of the young people that walk through my door to face the challenges that lie ahead of them. That’s why I’m such a staunch advocate for the incorporation of the engineering design process into all classrooms. The EDP is the epitome of growth mindset and transcends the classroom into every facet of day-to-day life. In that spirit, I continue to refine my practice. Every year, I identify one area of my instruction as a point of emphasis. In the past, these areas have ranged from classroom management, to individualized learning plans, to the integration of technology. One area I’ve been putting off is refining the writing process that occurs within my STEM course. Why have I been putting it off? Quite honestly, I struggle with writing. I believe in the value of writing, but freely acknowledge that it’s not a strength I possess. Opening up this area of my practice could be humbling, but it’s my hope that we (myself as well as fellow educators) will all benefit from this experience. In the spring of 2016, I was approached by a fellow educator in my district, Jen Tropp. Jen is a high school ELA teacher whom I’ve known since I was a teenager, and a trusted friend. She also happens to be on Greenon Local School’s Writing Across the Curriculum Committee. The group’s goals are to assess needs and then assist with the integration of writing in all classrooms and disciplines. Knowing I have a team to provide non-threatening, constructive feedback eliminated all excuses and let me know it was time to refine this area of my practice. While opening up my classroom is never easy, I jumped at this opportunity and decided I’d use it to improve the engineering design journals required of my eighth grade STEM students. Up to this point, formal journals have been used intermittently. While spiral bound notebooks are used on occasion, they aren’t versatile enough to suit the needs of a wide array of projects. The guide sheets I provide for my students are very good, but are cobbled together from a couple of different sources and need to be tweaked to work in all situations. My goal is to develop a flexible system that is consistent, allows for my students to make the journal their own, and allows each student to see not only the evolution of their product, but also the evolution of their ideas. As an educator, this system of documentation offers a deeper understanding of a student’s thought process. Not only can I see their answer (the product), but I can also learn more about how a student reached their conclusions (the process). Then I can find areas to place my own notes for remediation or to challenge the student to help take their thoughts to the next level. My Teaching Channel EDP blogs and videos have generated quite a bit of interest amongst Tchers. One of the most frequent requests is for materials to support the utilization of engineering design journals. As I refine the writing that occurs within my classroom, I plan to share all of the materials I develop and adapt to suit my needs. In the meantime, I’m curious to learn more about the methods and tools you utilize within your learning space. If you have resources or comments, please feel free to share and open a discussion below. I’m looking forward to getting better together! William Adams said”You can have anything you want if you want it badly enough. You can be anything you want to be, do anything you set out to accomplish if you hold to that desire with singleness of purpose”. In my native country of Benin Republic, transportation is an important aspect in our community as it is all over the world. As a little boy , I was fascinating about the structures and the functions of cars. As I got older, my curiosity about car grew even more. One day, when I woke up, I started thinking about the shape of my Dad car and I went to get the car key. After getting the key, I went to open the car and I started to look at every part of the car from the front to the back and I began to wonder about how all those part(the Radio, the sits, the wheel, the gear etc) have been fix together in the car. While I was thinking, an idea came in my mind “why can’t you go to the auto-mechanic to have more idea about your curiosity”. So,I decided to go down to the auto-mechanic shop everyday when I get free time to watch how cars are being fixed and transform. The more I watched, the more I became eager and fascinated to work as a mechanic. It was for this reason that, two years ago I decided to go to a trade school, to obtain more knowledge about cars. Once I had decided,I went to my parents to propose my idea to them. Both of them encouraged me to follow my dream of becoming mechanic. After having the conversation with my parents, I inquire about the auto-mechanic program. By doing so, I got in contact with a family friend, who was in charge of the program. We agreed that I will be attending class six days a week.. During that first week, I did not know all the tools names and it was a little bit hard for me when my teacher ask me to go get them. He had to explain how it looks like every time he sends me or he tells me to ask one of the other worker because I was not the only one learning. They were two others younger man than me who usually help me at anytime, because I can’t always go to my teacher to ask for help. On the second week, I learned how to change car oil. Here are some description about it. First, pull and park the car into a space with level ground. Make sure that there is enough working area to work and have your tools by your side. Second, place the car in park, remove the keys and apply the parking brake. Third, jack stand and never work a car that is supported by a jack only. Fourth, put the draining pan underneath engine and remove the oil cap and the oil plug and let it drain on its own. Fifth, pour a fresh and new oil into the oil tank and let it cool. Finally, put back the oil cap on and start the car to make sure that the procedure was successful . On the third week, I learned where and how to check the different kind of oil, such as engine oil, brake oil, wheel oil, transmission oil etc. During the same week I learned how to remove and replace some part of the car such as the tires, the brakes, and the transmissions. It was at this point that things got a little bit difficult because it was necessary to have a lot of strength to loosen the tight bolts and I had to do everything possible not to strip or break the bolts, also I had to be careful not to get hurt. It was at this stage that I realised that being an auto- mechanic would be hard work and it would take a long time to get good at it. I used to get hurt while working, I was all the time with black motor oil. Sometimes, I did not have the enough strength to loosen some bolt and my teacher had to do it for me. There were also some part of the car that were too heavy and it takes two to four people to lift them. It tooks me months to get strong enough and as time went on, I learned other skills about car and I was able to graduate! The reason why this is one of my greatest accomplishment is because I was determined and persistent to be an auto-mechanic. Even though being a mechanic is not my ultimate goal but it is a stepping stone for me and it shows how hard working and dedicating I am. 17) Student Choice: Please select a topic, blog title, and blog category. Success I am a student, I wake up in the morning thinking about my classes. How can I do to succeed in this class? Success is a great thing. When you succeed in something especially when you reach your goal, you have this feeling, this feeling of joy which help you live more and put you in the comfort zone. You are happy about what you have done, after the struggles. Nothing is easy but do your best to succeed now before it becomes late. I remember my teacher told me to pass this class, you have to come in class on time, do your homework, listen to your teacher or classmates when they are talking or explaining something important. You have to take note of important keys that would help you. Do more research especially when you have an assignment and turn in your assignment on time. Success is not for people who wake up late. If you didn’t know yesterday, now you know it. So take the advantage and get up. It is not late. You are the success, get up now. I decide to get up today and I want you to follow me so we can succeed together. The train is not waiting. Get up my friend and let make this happen. I want to pass my class and succeed in my life. Recycling Papers
Paper has played and will continue to play a significant role in our society. It is an universal material that everyone uses, including students and teachers. Therefore, it is very important to recycle papers because we use so much of them. We the students of DCCC(Delaware County Community College) have come up with two ways to recycle papers. First, we have decided to make signs which we will post all around the school to encourage students to recycle papers. Another way is placing recycle bins all around the buildings so that students would trash recycling materials in the recycle bins. By recycling material like papers, it will make a difference in our society. From this video what impress me is to not be scare to fail in life. When ever I feel down I like to listen to motivational speech to motivate me more to continue putting my best effort in everything I do. The one thing I always strive for is greatness and by doing that I'm not afraid to put myself out there because I believe in myself and the works that I am doing. Living means do what you love to do. In this class I know that if I give my 100% into it, I will succeed. I know I am not good in English but I'm not afraid to do mistake that will lead me to the right answer or result. I'm not afraid ,even if I fail 10 times but on the 11 times I know I will succeed greatly. |
