Academic Mindset Writing Process Reflection
Who did I work with to compose my academic mindset project? Was this a good approach? To compose my academic mindset project, I worked by myself and this was not a good approach just because I didn’t see somebody who knows better than me to look over what I wrote. What was the most difficult part of my writing process? Why? What did I do to overcome the obstacles? The most difficult part of my writing process was how to choose the write words, write without a lot of grammar or orthography mistakes and how to begin a good paragraph. Because sometimes I when I don’t understand something, I have to think in French first. To overcome this I think that I have to do my best to get this homework done. Also I had my dictionary next to me that helps me. When did I write this project? Good approach? I wrote this essay after work when my memory was free and I had nothing else to think about but only my homework. Yes, It was a good approach because it allowed me to find some new words that is helpful. Where did I write this project? Good approach? I wrote this project in my bedroom and this was a good approach because it is a quiet place where I can focus and not be disturb. Why did I choose to write about my chosen topic? I choose to write about my topic just because it is related to my projects and I wanted to talk about it. How will I adapt/revise my writing process for future revision of the academic mindset assignment? To revise my writing process, first, I have to save my draft in a safe place. Secondly, i have to reread it to think about some new ideas. Thirdly I have to write dawn the new ideas and get more information about the project. Fourth, I have to find more time to go to a tutors so I can get more ideas and corrections about the things I did wrong. Fifth, I have to other project relate to the one I did and finally give a professor who will grade me. Jean Badou
ENG 100 Assignment #2 Academic Mindsets Argument Professor; Mr Sabatino Mangini February, 23,2017 Fixed and Growth Mindsets Aristotle said, “Education is the best provision for life’s journey.’’ The best I can do to be successful in my life’s journey is to earn a college degree. Going to college will provide me with the means to pursue a career in the medical field. Earning a degree will prepare me and mature me to face the real world. However, before I can become a doctor I must be on the right path. I must have the mindset to overcome any and every obstacle that may want to interfere with my education. Everything that I am doing does matter and all the things I am doing now is preparing me for a better and healthy life. In this essay I’ll talk about how has my academic mindset impacted my abilities as a student to learn. When talking about academic mindsets I will refer to two things, which are the fixed mindset and the growth mindset, how they have impact my abilities to learn. Many students are born with different talents that enable them to be successful in life but students like me will have to be taught a skill and master it, in order to be successful in it. So therefore, we all are different because we all have different mindset, goals and different purpose in life. Some students think negatively while others think positively. Some student think that there are born with certain amount of intelligence and they can not develop it while other think that they can develop their intelligence by working hard to get what they want. I think those who think that way are in the right direction. I know that when somebody have a fixed mindset, that person think that he or she is born with a limited intelligence and he or she can not do anything about it. At school for example when that person is not doing well, he or she can think that it is how he or she is born, that he or she is dumb and can’t get improvement. On the other side I know that someone who have a growth mindset think that he or she is capable to develop his or her intelligence by working hard. According to the article ( The Perils of “Growth Mindset” Education: Why we’re trying to fix our kids when we should be fixing the system), Alfie Kohn stated that “Kids tend to fare better when they regard intelligence and other abilities not as fixed traits that they either have or lack, but as attributes that can be improved through effort.” and according to another article which is (Teachers,Parents Often Misuse Growth Mindset Research), Carol Dweck stated that “kids with what she calls “fixed mindset” stop trying when when confronted with a challenge because they’ve convinced themselves that they’re not good at math or writing or whatever the subject is” on the other side she say that “adult can, instead, help foster a “growth mindset”- the belief that the brain is like muscle that can grow stronger through hard work.” I like more Dweck argument because she is using the growth mindset. After reading her article, I remember that when I came in America many of my friends were telling me that it’s hard to pass the GED test, especially the English and the Social Study part. When these friends were saying this stuff, I used to said to myself that I’m going to maybe fail this test because first, I don’t understand English, Secondly I don’t know a lot about America History and there is no way I could pass it in French which is the language I speak well. Those though were a barrier for me but I don’t like to be negative about things. At that point the fixed mindset wanted to stop me to do what I can do to succeed and continue my studies but as I’m positive and I like to be positive about things even though I know it will not be easy, I told myself that I am not a failure and even though, I will fail, I will try and do it. Also, people who go and pass the test does not have two heads, so , I will do anything I can to pass this test. After those reflection to myself, I found a school where I can learn, understand, speak and have conversation in English with people. This school was Delaware County Literacy Council ( DCLC). I started on October 2014 where I used to go two days a week. This is the beginning of growth mindset. I started to think about how to do, to understand and learn faster so I can pass my GED which will allow me to start college. I started the class and was getting a lot of homework that will help me with my writing, vocabulary, grammar skills and also to get better in communication. Nothing is easy in this world if you don’t give yourself into it. You have to be determine. By the time I was taking this class, every time in the afternoon or evening if you see me I always have a paper or my bag in my hand. It is either I am going to do my homework or I am doing it. I knew I will study a lot to get it and that was what I did. It was not easy but I did it. I couldn’t speak to anybody and that person will understand me in English. After learning English, it is now I started to take my GED Classes at the same place in 2015 and I found another place too which is the Welcoming Center for New Pennsylvania. I was going to both school and at the same time was working full time. That is what we call “determination”. Finally I get my GED in June 2016 and here I am. I think America education System does not help a lot because there are not a lot of challenges between students. For example in my country there are a lot of challenges where students will be working on the board after class just to be able to work harder than others. They have there own teacher who help them understand what they need to understand. I have a growth mindset because I like to learn and I like to know new things, have more experiences. This is what I will tell you. In life, you have to be positive and be ready to embrace new opportunities. You have to persevere to get what you want even though it is hard, try more and more to achieve what you want and here are three questions that I would like you to ask yourself every time you have a doubt about something. Where I am going and how to get there? Can I try first before I say I can’t? Now, I didn’t do good, how can I improve myself to get there? ***Bonus Blog (optional): This I Believe [Category: Mindset]: Please visit This I Believe and read a few articles to get a sense of the writing genre. 6) Growth and Fixed Mindsets [Category: Mindset]: Please write a post that explores growth mindset versus a fixed mindset. In the post, please complete the following:
Fixed mindsets and Growth mindset are two differents things. In the world, everyone have differents ways of thinking. Some people think negatively while some think positively. Every students is different and unique. I wonder why it is like that. In the article name Teachers, Parents Often Misuse Growth Mindset Research, the author psychologist Carol Dweck, from Stanford University stated according to her researches that a lot of students believe that intelligence is a fixed traits. They believe in their own intelligence. “ Kids with what she called fixed mindsets stop trying when when confronted with a challenge” Just because they think there are not good in a subject for example Writing and Math. In contrast to that statement, Carol Dweck argues that “adult can, instead, help foster a “good mindset”- the belief that the brain is like a muscle that can grow stronger through hard work”. According to those statement Carol Dweck distinguish what is fixed mindset and growth mindsets. From my understanding, children with fixed mindsets think that their efforts toward a work is worthless and in school there are not smart enough to grow their intelligence but students with growth mindsets believe they can grow their intelligence by working hard. In the article The perils of Growth Mindset Education, the author Alfie Kohn stated that “kids tend to fare better when they regard intelligence and other abilities not as fixed traits that they either have or lack, but as attributed that can be improved through effort.” According to these two articles I think that student who think that there are smart enough and don’t want to develop their abilities of learning or intelligence are fixed mindsets while the students who want to grow their intelligence by working hard have a growth mindset. As a college students I have both fixed and growth mindset but I have more growth mindsets. I have a fixed mindsets because sometimes I feel like people will make fun of me if I say something that is not correct or something that is different than their point of view. I also have a growth mindsets because I believe in myself and I know that I’m a learner and I like to take things positively in my life. I like to learn from my mistake and get better everyday of my life. Especially in school I like to improve myself. Hiraeth Writing Process Reflection
When I first think about what does the word Hiraeth means, I could not find any respond because I did not have any clou. After my teacher explanation and my own researches I find out that the word hiraeth means homesickness, a place or a moment in your life where you would like to go back to but it is impossible. When i think about this word the scene or story that come in my mind is the best moment I had with my grandmother before she left or she died in December 2014 when I was in my native country of Benin Republic. Who did I work with to compose my hiraeth project? Was this a good approach? To compose my hiraeth project,I work by myself because that's the first step and this was a good approach because it makes me go back in one of the best moment and baddest moment in my past. What was the most difficult part of my writing process? Why? What did I do to overcome the obstacles? The most difficult part of my witting process was the moment I think about the scene and I had an emotion and I that moment it was difficult for me to type. I had to stop and think about what happened because I think I will never see my grandmother anywhere but only her picture. To overcome the obstacle I said to myself I just have to pray for her and there is nothing that can bring her back right now. When did I write this project? Good approach? I wrote this project when I came from work and had nothing to do but to write about one of the important moment of my life. Fifth, find more information about the word "Hiraeth"and finally have a plan to write on time. Hiraeth Writing Process Reflection
Hiraeth! Hiraeth! What is the meaning of this word ? That was the question I asked myself the first time I heard this word. After the explanation of the word by my professor and some researches on my own, I found that the word Hiraeth doesn't have a specific meaning but it can be associate to be homesickness, a place or a moment in your past that you would like to go back to make changes but can’t. It can also be or a new environment that one is not used to or never was. When I think about this word “Hiraeth” the scene that come in my mind is as a young child in my native country of Benin Republic in west africa, I was the most happiness little boy then anyone would image. I’m not only happy because of my friends but because of the happiness I witness among my community. In my country, there are a lot of villages and everybody have it’s village. Even if you are born in a city, your parents are from somewhere which is their village and as long as it is their village, it’s yours too. When I was kid, I didn’t have the chance to stay long in my parents village which is my village. It was by the time I grow up and was 15 years old I started to go in my village for vacation. I usually go when we take school break or vacation. Whenever time I go in my village, I usually like to spend more time with my grandparents especially my grandmother because she likes to talk to me and spend time with me. My grandmother likes to go in her field every morning and after her field in the afternoon she likes to make her “Tchakpalo” which is a drink made with corn, wheat, and water. Tchakpalo is a traditional drink in Benin and a lot of people like it. The first day the tchakpalo is made, everybody can drink it. Even a kid but after three and more days a kid can’t drink it anymore because it becomes like alcohol. I remember if I go in my village, the thing I like to do with my grandmother is to help her if she want to go in her field or do her Tchakpalo. Every morning we wake up early by 7:30 AM get ready to go in the field. We usually pack the things we will need when we will get there like: Clothes, bowl to put food, water, ingredients and others necessary things that we will need. After packing up everything, we all walk in group but my grandmother usually call a “Zemidjan”. In my country Zemidjan is the people who drives you around with their motorcycle. When she get in the field she usually wait for us under a big tree where there are all the tools we are going to use that day. The field was about 20 minutes of walking from the house . So when we get there, we put everything under the tree. Under the tree was like a house where we have pot, fire to cook, water, all the need of kitchen and also some chair and tables . After getting in the field we (my brother Armel, my cousin Nina and Saturnin, my aunt and I) usually take the tools we are going to use in the field. In the field, we usually plant corns, beans, yams, peanuts, pepper, tomatoes, cassava, some fruits and other food. We all plough while my grandmother stay behind planting the plant of the day. It might be corn, beans or another thing. We usually work together and while working we do some competition to see who will be the first who will finish to plough 10 to 20 lines. When my grandmother get tired, she goes under the tree to rest while we still working and in the afternoon like 12:30 pm or 1 pm we all stay together and cook the meal we will eat. While one person is going to get pepper, the other will get tomatoes or yams or the ingredient we want to use. After getting everything my aunt, my cousin Nina and my grandmother help each other to cook the soup while we the man cook the yam and make fufu. After everything is done the woman stay together and eat. Same thing with the man. After eating and digesting, we all rest for about 20 minutes ,talk and laugh and later go back to work. By 3 pm my grandmother go home while we still working and after two hours to three, we all finish and take the way to home. The last time I went in my village was to bury my grandmother who died in December 2014 and this the moment I realise that I can not see her again I realise that everything is done between us on this ground. My grandmother with whom I didn’t spend enough time with and I was thinking when I will come back in my village she will tell me some stories and we will have fun together. My Hiraeth [Category: Hiraeth]:
When I relate to the word “ Hiraeth” the scene for my past that illustrates a yearning for a home that I can not find again is when I was in my native country of Benin Republic in west Africa. I had the best time of my life, though life was not always easy but I had fun. My childhood friends (Modeste, Yacoubou, Nina,Genevieve and Rafiath) and I always had something going on,whether it may be studying, partying , going to the movies or just hanging out. Never did it ever cross my mind that we all will go in our separate ways because of how close we were and how close our families were. The more we got older the more we drift apart from each other. In high school everyone fined a group that best fit to their personality at that time. We no longer hangout as much or had interest in getting back together, like we were. During that time I questioned myself what might have happened cause I never imagin that that we were like that. Up till this day I year for our friendship to be how it was like but I know it won't happen cause some of us (me for an example) no longer live in Benin and some of us now have a family to raise . It really hard to have had something and you lost it to something stupid . Well I guess that’s how life is, sometime we get or not what our heart desire. Hiraeth Project Discussion [Category: Hiraeth]:
Hiraeth, hiraeth!, What does Hiraeth mean. This is the first time I hear this word and as I speak another language which is French, the first thing I usually do when I don’t understand a new word in English is to relate it to French. This time, it does not help so the second step is to research it with some sources which are dictionary, google and others. After searching this word on google, this is the answer I found according to wikipedia ” The University of Wales, Lampeter attempts to define it as homesickness tinged with grief or sadness over the lost or departed. It is a mix of longing, yearning, nostalgia, wistfulness, or an earnest desire[2] for the Wales of the past." From my understanding the word”Hiraeth” means a place you would like to go back to but you can’t, it is also a lost of a precious time in your life. If I will write a topic about the word Hiraeth, it will be about the year I lost my grandfather or grandmother also about the time me and some of my friends used to study together after class or in the weekend also when we used to play soccer together and usually go to play with other team. |
